Chen Kaige Praises Highly of Leslie Cheung
In response to the recent criticisms made by Hong Kong actor Anthony Wong, Chen Kaige states that he has paid a small price for his recent work, "The Promise." Yet, Wong admits that the award-winning "Farewell My Concubine" is a great movie. Chen Kaige agrees that "Farewell My Concubine" is very well-made. Chen says that Leslie is not only a great actor but also a man with a very good character. Leslie is able to express the soul of the role. Most importantly, both Leslie and Chen Kaige have the same dream and that is to make a great film.

Jacob Cheung Shares Thoughts on Working With Leslie Cheung
"Working in the film industry usually let people become really close friends in a very short time. Yet, at the same time, it's easy to build up a relationship that is shallow and superficial. In order to avoid this kind of relationship, I try to keep a certain distance," says director Jacob Cheung.

Based on this belief, Jacob Cheung separates between work and friends. Although he has worked with numerous actors, he rarely has any contact with his fellow colleagues.

However, there is someone that Jacob Cheung thinks otherwise, and that is Leslie Cheung. "Filming 'The Kid' really made me feel stressed out. Twenty filmmakers had decided to make non-commercial films in order to bring a change into the Hong Kong film industry. Nobody took any action, yet Leslie took the lead. When we signed the contract, Leslie asked for a dollar as his paycheck for the movie. Originally Leslie wanted to star in the movie for free, but signing that contract required a 'value.'"

"I intend to bring in more high quality films like 'The Kid' into my movie company."

Graphic Sensation
PICTORIAL coffee-table books, or xie zhen ji, are common publications in the Asian entertainment scene, particularly in Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

The cover of Passion of China, featuring Leslie Cheung.

However, while pictorial books amongst female artistes are common, those by male artistes are considerably fewer. After all, it takes a pretty confident, or vain, guy to publish a book with fancy pictures of oneself.

Nevertheless, over the years, the trend has changed and there are numerous such books by male artistes in the market.

One of the most notable was Leslie Cheung, who won design awards for his Passion of China photo-book released in 2001.

The book, which was released in Japan, featured photos of Cheung taken at various stops during his mainland China concert tour in 2000. Then there is Taiwanese boyband F4, who sold millions of copies of their various pictorial books during the height of the F4 fever in 2001 and 2002.

"Dearest Leslie, a flame in our hearts" Photo Album and Poster Set

Leslie would have turned 50 this year. To mark the big day, we, Leslie Legacy Association (a non-profit making organization registered under the laws of Hong Kong, dedicated to extend the legacies of Leslie) presented an exquisite photo album of private photos taken and contributed by fans as our birthday gift for Leslie.

Thousands of photos were collected from fans over the past two years. Each one of them recorded and captured the brief yet memorable moment of a fan's encounter with the Legend. Now consolidated in print, they form a trail for us to follow Leslie's footprints at different times and in different parts of the world. Thanks to the contributing fans, the photos have enabled us to produce an exquisite photo album to be shared by all. The photos may not be the best ones by professional standard but the love and loyalty these amateur photographers have for Leslie makes them very special and valuable.

These photos have never been published before. Despite that some of them have remained in fans' private photo albums for over 20 years and that some of the negatives could no longer be retrieved, there is a loyal and loving heart that stands up to the test of time behind every one of these photos.

Approximately 200 were selected out of the thousands of photos collected, for the photo album. Each photo is accompanied by text written in recollection of the occasion. The photo album is priced at HK$500.00/copy. 10% of the sale proceeds will go to the "Flame in Our Hearts" charity funds. The balance will go to LLA to cover deficits accumulated over the past years. Any surplus will go to LLA's reserve account.

A set of 5 posters of 75 cm x 58 cm each (selected from the photos collected) is available for HK$200 per set. All net proceeds from the posters, again go to the "Flame in Our Hearts" charity funds.

Please contact info@leslielegacy.com if you would like to purchase a copy.

Leslie Appears At Winnie Hsin's Taipei Concert

Winnie Hsin had her first ticketed concert at Taipei International Convention Center on June 30th and July 1st. "A dear friend of mine has promised me that he would be my special guest. Tonight I have saved this place especially for him. I was worried that Leslie would get lost and could not find the venue," said Winnie.

Right after saying this, Leslie appeared on the big screen and the live band began to play "Endless Embrace." She broke down while singing the duet with Leslie via the screen and the audience applauded to show their encouragement including Leslie fans who attended the concert. It was the most touching moment at the concert. Winnie further added, "I will save this place for Gor Gor forever."

Leung Ka-Fai Talks About Leslie
In a recent interview with Eunice Lam, Tony Leung Ka-Fai talked about his good friend and colleague, Leslie. He has collaborated with Leslie for about six times. Ka-Fai said, "Leslie is so talented. Although he has been in the showbiz for so many years, he is still very innocent. He would show all his emotions on his face." Ka-Fai further added, "Leslie is very a 'tightwad,' but he is not going to be angry for a long time." Ka-Fai doesn't like director Wong Kar-Wai since he feels that Wong used Leslie for the movie "Happy Together."

Eunice Lam added, "Leslie is very good at languages, he is fluent in Mandarin and English. I really miss this great friend. I don't have to interview Ka-Fai to write about Leslie, I can write about Leslie myself since I've known him for years."

Jacky Cheung: Leslie Also Has Stage Fright
Singer Stephanie Suen didn't remember the lyrics to the song she was performing at the Golden Melody Awards. Jacky Cheung says that most singers are usually nervous before their performance on stage. Even if he has sung a song for 100 times, he cannot guarantee that he is not going to make a mistake for the 101st time. He adds, "When I was still a newbie, Leslie was already a superstar. We were waiting in the backstage and I saw Leslie trembling."

Leslie's Wax Figure at the New Madame Tussauds Shanghai
>

Although the wax figure of the Hong Kong singer and movie star Leslie Cheung seemed to be the most popular figure at Shanghai's new Madame Tussauds Museum on the opening day, fans are very disappointed with the wax figure, particularly the hairstyle. Many fans are planning to submit their request for a refinement.

Madame Tussauds Shanghai opened on May 1, 2006 at the New World Department Store on West Nanjing Road. It is the Tussauds Group's sixth waxwork museum. There are other museums in London, Amsterdam, Las Vegas, New York and Hong Kong.

Producers Bid For "A Better Tomorrow" Remake Rights

Both Hong Kong and Korean producers are bidding to buy the remake rights to John Woo's classic Hong Kong gangster movie "A Better Tomorrow." As stated earlier, the remake will be directed by Stephen Fung and produced by Andy Lau's film company. Now, South Korean film producer wants to buy the remake rights from Fortune Star Entertainment.

A Better Tomorrow tells the story of two estranged brothers - one a gangster, the other a policeman.

In Woo's original, released in 1986, Hong Kong heartthrob Leslie Cheung plays the policeman and Ti Lung plays his older brother. Chow Yun-Fat plays an associate of the gangster.

The success of "A Better Tomorrow" brought the "Hong Kong wave" to South Korea and led more Hong Kong films to enter the Korean market, creating a huge fan base for Hong Kong movie stars Leslie Cheung, Chow Yun-Fat, and Joey Wong.

John Woo's "A Better Tomorrow" rocketed both Leslie Cheung and Chow Yun-Fat to stardom. Now, Hong Kong and Korean film companies plan to do a remake of this classic movie.
