Jacob Cheung Shares Thoughts on Working With Leslie Cheung
"Working in the film industry usually let people become really close friends in a very short time. Yet, at the same time, it's easy to build up a relationship that is shallow and superficial. In order to avoid this kind of relationship, I try to keep a certain distance," says director Jacob Cheung.
Based on this belief, Jacob Cheung separates between work and friends. Although he has worked with numerous actors, he rarely has any contact with his fellow colleagues.
However, there is someone that Jacob Cheung thinks otherwise, and that is Leslie Cheung. "Filming 'The Kid' really made me feel stressed out. Twenty filmmakers had decided to make non-commercial films in order to bring a change into the Hong Kong film industry. Nobody took any action, yet Leslie took the lead. When we signed the contract, Leslie asked for a dollar as his paycheck for the movie. Originally Leslie wanted to star in the movie for free, but signing that contract required a 'value.'"
"I intend to bring in more high quality films like 'The Kid' into my movie company."
